You hear jungle drums, exotic bird calls and a Tarzan-like yell!
An amorous sheik rides in on a camel, a berserk squirrel runs
up a church-goer's pant leg and that prank caller is on the line
again!
Is this a double-pepperoni pizza dream??? No, it's just Ray
Stevens!
Musical funnyman Ray Stevens is an American original who has
dominated the novelty record genre like no other...but WAIT!!
Stevens is also an extremely talented songwriter, arranger,
musician and singer with a Grammy for Pop Male Vocalist for
his self-penned standard "EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL" and another
Grammy for his creative classic bluegrass arrangement of "MISTY"
and numerous other Granny nominations for the gospel song "LOVE
LIFTED ME" and many others!
Then just when you think you've got him pigeon-holed...Look
out, here he comes again...Boogity, Boogity...Streaking to over
five million sales with "THE STREAK".
Ray Stevens grew up in Georgia listening to Lefty Frizzell,
Kitty Wells and Eddy Arnold and then discovered Ruth Brown,
The Clovers and The Drifters and what resulted is a wonderfully
confused musical mind that is sort of like 'Ray Charles Meets
Spike Jones'.
Whatever the mystery behind Stevens' unique approach to music
happens to be, his enduring popularity and success is no mystery
to his fans who voted Ray Stevens "Comedian Of The Year" nine
years in a row at the popular TNN/Music City News Awards.
In 1992, Ray Stevens took his outstanding musical talent and
wacky sense of the absurd to another level by offering the first
ever music video album with his "Ray Stevens Comedy Video Classics".
That collection of eight hilarious video productions of songs
like "IT'S ME AGAIN MARGARET", "THE MISSISSIPPI SQUIRREL REVIVAL"
and "THE STREAK" immediately went to #1 on Billboard's Music
Video chart, sold over two million copies (that's 20 times platinum
if you're counting), won Billboard's Video Of The Year and stayed
on the chart for 115 weeks.
Ray Stevens followed that with a video of his popular stage
show titled "Ray Stevens Live" from the theatre he owned in
midwest entertainment mecca Branson, Missouri. At last peek,
it was still in Billboard's Top Ten after 77 weeks. During Ray
Stevens' 17-month stint in Branson, he performed to over 1.6
million enthusiastic fans!
Ray Stevens recently released the ultimate music video...a
music video movie titled "Get Serious" that Stevens describes
as ten music videos woven together into a story. The videos
are all new productions of new material like "THERE AIN'T NOBODY
HERE BUT US CHICKENS", popular Steven's near-hits like "THE
DOORIGHT FAMILY" and classic Ray Stevens'songs in music video
form for the first time like "GITARZAN" and "AHAB THE ARAB".
And the story?? Well, a record company wants Ray Stevens to...you
guessed it..."GET SERIOUS"! Not very likely, but Stevens is
very serious indeed about his songs, his records and videos
and his stage shows.
Comedy is not easy, but Ray Stevens makes it look that way.
Maybe it's because he has that unique ability to touch our funny
bones and our hearts at the same time or because his humor plays
as well in a Las Vegas showroom as it does at an all-family
fare date.
In a word, you can trust Ray Stevens... Trust him to be original,
professional, zany, insightful, exciting and... Trust him to
deliver outstanding music and comedy entertainment that the
whole family can enjoy.
