It should come as no surprise that the Spinners have always
made music that is at once timeless and utterly in tune with
the times.
The Spinners are one of the few groups who can boast of
four lead singers: John Edwards, Bobbie Smith, Henry Fambrough
and Pervis Jackson, with Bill Henderson making up the quintet.
In the past years, The Spinners have acquired twelve gold
records with their hits climbing to the top of both pop and
R & B charts. In 1972, The Spinners came to Atlantic Records
teamed with producer, Thom Bell, and the hits really started
rolling. A partial list of their Atlantic single successes
include such classic tunes as: Mighty Love, Then Came You,
Rubberband Man, I'll Be Around, One Of A Kind (Love Affair),
Games People Play and Could It Be You. In 1977, John Edwards
(who had been filling in for ill group members on the road
since 1973) became a full fledged Spinner. Following several
years of on the job training for new recruit Edwards, 1980
saw the Spinners return to the top in typically grand style.
The Dancin' and Lovin' album released in late 1979, marked
their first work with producer Michael Zager and by early
1980, the single, Working My Way Back To You, was topping
Pop and R & B charts alike, earning the Spinners their 12th
Atlantic Gold Record.
Close behind, the Lovin Trippin' album followed in May 1980,
and included the Cupid Melody, one of the fastest selling
records in the history of the Spinners. The Labor Of Love
album followed and featured such stand out tunes as Yesterday
Once More and Long Live Soul Music.
With the release of the Spinners album, Can't Shake This
Feeling, the quintet entered a brand new phase of their remarkable
career. For their fourth LP in just over two years, The Spinners
had joined for the first time the award winning producing/writing/playing
team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. In addition to their
professional skill, the Spinners, have through the years,
felt an obligation to return some of the good things that
have happened to them to the public and that is why they are
know as "The Group With A Conscience."
The Spinners recently received a star on the Hollywood "Walk
Of Fame."
The Spinners have been nominated six times for a Grammy
and entertained twice on the Grammy television show. They
received a Black Gold Award on a Dick Clark TV special for
their many achievements in the record industry. The Spinners
also have a single on Arista Records with Dionne Warwick,
"I Don't Need Another Love."
When they are not in the studio, The Spinners maintain an
enviable packed calendar of concert appearances and television
dates.
The Spinners have been giving special meaning to the word
"class" with hard work, dedication and most important, music
talent and quality which has kept them at the top year after
year.
