Born into a well-known Australian show business family, Helen
Reddy has been performing professionally since she was a child.
Five years after coming to the United States, Helen Reddy
signed with Capitol Records. The very first track she cut
was not only her first hit single but also the first hit single
for Andrew Lloyd Webber, "I Don't Know How To Love Him."
However, it was a song Helen Reddy penned "I Am Woman,"
that became her first number one record. Helen won a Grammy
Award for her performance and the song is now recognized as
the anthem for the feminist movement.
More top ten singles followed and songs like "Leave Me Alone
(Ruby Red Dress)," "Angie Baby," "Delta Dawn" and "You And
Me Against The World," on gold and platinum selling albums
led to Helen Reddy's international multi-media career. Reddy's
television specials have been seen in over forty countries
while her starring role in the Disney film, "Pete's Dragon,"
continues to attract a new generation of fans.
In the mid-8O's, Helen Reddy returned to her theatrical
roots with starring roles in productions of Cole Porter's
"Anything Goes," Irving Berlin's "Call Me Madam," and "The
Mystery of Edwin Drood." In January, 1995, Reddy made her
Broadway debut in "Blood Brothers," Willy Russell's long-running
West End musical. Later that year, Helen was thrilled to take
the show back to Liverpool, its city of origin. She then spent
the fall and winter touring the U.S. in another Willy Russell
play, "Shirley Valentine," winning rave reviews for her performance.
Helen Reddy still travels the world with her band, performing
at one point, on three continents in one week. During the
summer of 1996, she toured in the American premiere of an
Australian comedy, "Love, Julie" with Millicent Martin. Helen
Reddy rang in 1997 with her debut at Rainbow and Stars, New
York City's premier cabaret venue for a four week, sold-out
engagement. Later that spring, Reddy reprised her critically
acclaimed performance as "Shirley Valentine" for ten weeks
in Toronto, followed by a summer spent in London where she
made her West End debut in "Blood Brothers," celebrating its'
10th year. In the Fall of 1998, Helen Reddy will be back in
the United States touring the West Coast as "Shirley Valentine.".
Along with her world travels, Helen Reddy recorded her last
album, "Feel So Young" on her own label using new, environmentally-sensitive
packaging.
Active in community affairs, Helen Reddy served for three
years as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the State
of California. Of the many honors she has received, Reddy
is most proud of the tulip named for her in Holland and she
grows the reddish-violet bulbs in her garden in Santa Monica,
CA.
