As a singer/actress/songwriter/author, Gloria Loring is widely
recognized for her talents and for her contributions as a spokesperson
for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International.
Gloria Loring began her career with the sole intention of
singing. And sing she did. From the time Gloria Loring started
school, she sang in every choir she could find. Gloria Loring
sang professionally for the first time at 14 with a folk group
named "Those Four." Just after Gloria Loring's 18th birthday,
she graduated to nightclubs with a solo engagement at the
Playboy Club in Miami. Loring's first big break came two years
later with a performance on the "Merv Griffin Show". This
led to countless appearances on major TV variety shows such
as "The Ed Sullivan Show", "The Tonight Show", "The Carol
Burnett Show", and "Dean Martin."
During these years, Gloria Loring married and had two children,
Brennan, born in 1974, and Robin, born in 1977. Gloria Loring
let her work take a backseat during her boys' early years,
but kept busy with acting lessons and songwriting in the hopes
of expanding her career. During this time, Gloria Loring co-wrote
the theme songs for the hit series "Diff'rent Strokes" and
"Facts of Life". In addition, one of Loring's songs, "What've
You Got to Lose" was recorded by the group, Pablo Cruise,
for the feature film "Inside Moves".
In 1977, Gloria Loring recorded a song called "Brooklyn"
with producer Mike Post. Although it was never intended, the
finished record sounded perfect for the county market. To
counteract Gloria's pop image, they released it under the
name Cody Jameson. It became a county hit.
In 1979, Gloria Loring's older son, Brennan, was diagnosed
with diabetes. Upon learning that it's the third leading killer
disease in America, Loring decided to do something to save
her son from becoming a statistic. Gloria Loring joined the
Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and became its
Celebrity Chairman to help raise money for diabetes research.
In 1980, Gloria Loring won the role of "Liz Chandler" on
"Days of Our Lives". It was her first acting job and lasted
for 6 1/2 years. During that time, she secured a place in
the hearts of the daytime audience. Gloria Loring's singing
voice was once described by the Los Angeles Times as "one
of the best vocal instruments in pop music since the salad
days of Barbra Streisand," and she put it to good use in her
new job. Gloria Loring weekly singing performances on "Days"
generated a non-stop flow of fan mail and her acting talent
helped her become one of the most popular actresses in daytime.
The "Days" audience, over ten million strong, assisted in
giving Gloria Loring her first hit record. "Friends and Lovers",
a duet with Carl Andersen, sold almost one million singles
and was #1 all over North America.
A few months after joining "Days", Gloria Loring noticed
that the actors often traded recipes. "I thought a celebrity
cookbook would not only be a great souvenir for the fans,
but would also be a great way to raise money for research."
After thirteen months of work, The Days of Our Lives Celebrity
Cookbook was born. The first book was such a success that
a second volume was published two years later in 1983. Then
in 1985, Gloria Loring formed her own record company and released
an album for the benefit of JDF. That album, "A Shot in the
Dark", along with the cookbooks, raised over $1,000,000 for
diabetes research.
1986 was a year marked by many turning points. In the fall
of that year, Gloria Loring ended her 14 year marriage to
Alan Thicke. That same week, she also ended her contract with
"Days" and said good-bye to "Liz". Only weeks later, just
as "Friends and Lovers" was nearing #1, Gloria Loring's first
book was published. Kids, Food, and Diabetes contained recipes,
menus, and practical advice for parents of diabetic children.
In 1987, Gloria Loring co-starred in two movies for television
with Richard Crenna and Ann Jillian, joined the Pointer Sisters
in a Showtime TV Special, and helped create the good vibrations
of the Beach Boys 25th Anniversary Special. From there, Gloria
Loring went to Australia for her first concert tour of 27
sold-out shows.
1988 saw a return tour of Australia and the release of her
second album for Atlantic Records. Produced by George Duke,
"Full Moon/No Hesitation" featured some of the finest talents
in the music industry as backup for Gloria Loring's vocals.
Bobby CaIdwell, Jeffrey Osborne, Deniece Williams, Howard
Hewitt, Bill Champlin (of Chicago) and the Nylons added the
perfect framing for Gloria Loring's largely self-penned songs.
During 1989, Gloria Loring added new dimension to her repertoire.
She starred in her first stage production, "Blame it on the
Movies", at the Burt Reynolds Theatre. The occasion was marked
by rave reviews and a sold-out run of four weeks. Gloria Loring
also hosted a new series, "From the Heart", for King World
and has been a frequent guest host on the HOME Show.
In the fall of 1990, Gloria Loring starred in her first
comedy, "Queen of the Soaps", at the International City Theatre.
The show won a Drama-Logue Award. Gloria Loring also wrote
her second book, Parenting a Diabetic Child, published by
Lowell House in May, 1991. That same month, The Kids, Food,
and Diabetes Family Cookbook was published by Gloria Loring
for the benefit of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International.
During 1991, Gloria Loring also toured Australia for the third
time and starred in "Stardust", directed by Tony Award winner
Henry LeTang, which kept her singing and dancing in San Francisco
for three months.
Currently, Gloria Loring has released her seventh album,
"Is There Anybody Out There?" Ranging from the emotional title
song to the inviting update of Johnny Rivers' "Slow Dancin',"
the project features five new songs written by Gloria Loring.
As a singer, doing pop concerts or performing with a symphony
orchestra she performs in auditoriums and nightclubs around
the world. Gloria Loring has made special guest appearances
on hundreds of television programs, most recent are "Burke's
Law" on CBS and "Silk Stalkings" on the USA Network.
Gloria Loring's charitable efforts have been recognized
with several humanitarian awards, as well as the "Woman of
the Year" award by the Jewelers' Association for her work
on behalf of diabetes research. Loring is currently listed
in the World Who's Who of Women. Gloria Loring resides in
Southern California with her two sons, and her two cats, Lucy
and Ethel.
